The Rules

Boules is an incredibly simple sport to learn. That said, it takes years to truly master this leisurely pastime. Finesse, tactics and staying as cool as a cucumber are, as they say, the keys to success.

Let's go!

BOULES

Each team starts by throwing/placing/rolling one ball each. The team with the worst throw, i.e. furthest from the jack, continues throwing until they are closest. Then it's the opposing team's turn. Once every ball has left the players' hands on both teams, the team closest to the jack scores one point for each of their balls lying closer than the other team's. First to 13 points wins! The winning team throws the jack for round two.

Boules is always played two against two - it doesn't matter if it's individuals or teams.

Singles: One against one, three balls each.

Doubles: Two against two, three balls each.

Triples: Three against three, two balls each.

If there are more of you on the team, the rest can act as supporters until the next round, or just grin cheekily at the opposing team.

  1. Plant your feet firmly inside the circle. Mind your balance!
  2. Throw out the jack about 6 metres.
  3. Grip the ball and turn your palm downward.
  4. Throw the ball as close to the jack as possible. Point your knuckles and fingertips upward as you throw. This is called a "lob". If you're not quite there yet, you can roll the ball with precision to get as close as possible. Don't forget to bend your knees!
  5. If you don't dare go for the jack, you can always try to knock away your opponent's ball. Maybe not as effective, but oh so much fun.
